Inspirational classic book to show that Christian beliefs can be based on sound reason too!! October 18, 2006 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I would consider this book, "In Search of Certainty", to be one of the best that Josh McDowell has written. Just as Josh McDowell's bestseller, "More than a Carpenter" has brought a profound impact to the lives of millions, I hope that many people will also have the chance to read this book and be positively impacted by its message.
In "More than a Carpenter", Josh McDowell succeeded in bringing many to Christ and helping many Christians on their spiritual journey. In Search of Certainty, Josh McDowell has written to address some of the daunting questions that faced the modern Christian. Essentially, Josh presented a concise, clearly written account of why a Christian should believe in the existence of God and the bible as the inspired Word of God.
The modern Christian faced numerous scientific theories, countless "intellectual" arguments and tremendous societal pressure that conspire to dilute his belief in God. Josh McDowell's book seeks to repair this gap and hopefully, the reader, upon finishing reading this book with an open mind and an inquiring heart, will move from mere belief in God (that is often subject to doubt) to a rock solid conviction that his/her Christian beliefs are indeed correct all along.
This book addresses fundamental questions such as: Can I trust what I think? Who decides what is right? Is there really a meaning to life? Why do man have a pervading awareness of beauty and joy? In addition, it also addresses two contemporary issues that I believe many Christians struggle with: (1) Evolution versus Creation and (2) can reason and faith coexist? In the former, Josh McDowell (in my view) convincingly illustrates why evolution cannot be right. In the latter, Josh shows that faith and reason need not be conflicting, that in fact, faith tempered with reason brings about a stronger faith that is not easily crushed.
I believe this book is worth reading and hopefully will help you see how wonderful God is and that He does indeed give us plenty of evidence of his Existence. I also hope that, for Christians, this book will strengthen your walk with Him, as it does for me.
