Rapid start to translating NT in original language October 7, 2005 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This workbook is excellent since it gets the novice student translating NT Greek into English rapidly. In the fourth exercise, the student is already translating simple NT Greek including some excerpts from the NT itself.

Great Teach Yourself Resource! September 1, 2005 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this book knowing nothing, absolutely nothing, about Greek. I spend about 3 1/2 hours a week working through the workbook and textbook. It's really enjoyable, and the included CD really helps (especially with pronunciation). Be prepared to commit, thought, for this is no laid back subject, but a very disciplined one. Prof. Mounce is funny and lighthearted, but gets right to the point - he doesn't waste any time.
WONDERFUL! August 23, 2005 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Having already taken classical greek as part of my major in college, I absolutely love Mounce's concept and setup. I recommend his book and workbook to anyone who asks, and I dearly wish that he would make a version for classical greek. I had fabulous instructors in college, and I have another fabulous one now, but this method is so much more logical. Much more easy to have the work absorbed rather than memorized by rote, and much more useful too. The setup just makes more sense this way than the old style used in my classic Greek course.
Mounce's approach is similar to how one naturally acquires a language, learning the noun/concepts first and adding the verbs as they are needed. It's so encouraging to be able to translate right away, and it helps things stick better in your mind when you use them actively rather than simply memorizing lists.
I love that this workbook isn't full of puzzles and games. They always annoyed the heck out of me when I took Spanish! This is straightforward. Also, though, get the gnosko greek shareware. That has flashcards and stuff on it. The CD with the textbook is wonderful for pronunciation, too.
Ehh... August 14, 2005 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I would say that Mounce does a decent job with this textbook, and it has made learning Greek a little easier than I expected. I like the way that Mounce does not attempt to learn nouns and verbs at the same time. I find it helpful that he splits these into different sections. Some people may not like that, but I have found it less confusing than doing both at once. However, in this second edition he has made some addtions that are really more of a hindrance than a help. For example, one of the reasons that the first edition was so good was that all the examples and exercises were taken straight from the New Testament or Septuagent, but Mounce has added his own sentences in this one, and some of them are not helpful.
