The best book yet written on understanding the Bible. June 30, 1999 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
The Bible has been used and abused in a myriad of ways. Often the worst offenders have been evangelical Christians. The Kingdom of God could be a different place entirely if every Christian would read and APPLY this book. Fee and Stuart, two evangelical believers, have crafted a book that covers at a basic level all the issues related to reading and applying the Bible in one's life, church, and world. Please buy this book, read it, and use it!
A must have for every Christian June 18, 1999 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Fee and Stuart, two well known and respected bible scholars, have transformed years of study in the fields of exegesis and hermenuetics and translated that into a simple, straight forward explanation of biblical interpretation. This book is a must have for any person who desires to understand the great truths presented in the bible and apply them to everyday life. If you have ever asked the question "How will I ever understand this?" about the bible, this book will show you how.
Outstanding Book. November 16, 1998 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I am about to read this book for the third time. I have purchased four copies so far to give to friends. I have been reading read bible studies and commentaries for the last 32 years, and this is the best and most usefull book so far. I highly reacommend it!
Must read for new and old students of the Bible November 7, 1997 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
This is a wonderful book for both seasoned and new students of the bible. Written for the Christian, certainly useful to a Jewish student. He explains the necessary task of discovering what the original meaning of the text meant to the writer and first readers - hermeneutics - (to the best of our ability), and how to apply it to our lives today - exegesis. Why do we think "Love your neighbor as yourself" applies to us in 1997, but "Do not mingle cotton and linen" should stay back in the first centuries? What principles allow us to make this choice? They come from the same text. Far from shaking your faith, it will give you tools to discover and explain WHY you believe what you believe. This is often a more valuable step in witnessing to friends than telling them why THEY should believe it. A thin book, easily read, but will engage the serious scholar as well as the novice.
